Angel and the Badman (2009)

Trailer Link: Angel and The Badman 2009

This is a remake of a classic John Wayne western gone terribly wrong. I'll just say it now it's not worth watching. I watched it at my girlfriends house with her parents, luckily I was preoccupied enough that I could sit through it.

Basically the story line of this one is all in that trailer above but I'll go over again anyways. Bad guy falls in love with good girl and turns good in the end. And wallah! There you have it in a nutshell haha.

Pro's: Camera quality was good as well as audio. The props and outfits were good but something about the movie made it impossible to really feel like it was actually happening.

Con's: Bad acting and there was a serious lack of action, and even during the action scenes it was just not good enough to still be somewhat enjoyable. Some of the phrases they would say were lame or sounded repetitive and it was as if they would just repeat themselves and use the same repetitive words. Now do I need to repeat myself about it or do you get that whole repetitive thing I was referring too?

I give it a 1 out of 5.

New Post Coming Soon.

Sorry for the wait. I've been off in my little world figuring things out again. Stay tuned!

Question.

What do any of or one of you think I of my reviews? Should I be more detailed about the shows and tell more of the plot but explain my feelings on everything more in depth? Are my reviews the same review but with a different name? Or am I doing a great job and have nothing to improve on? Any thoughts or concerns?

Jonah Hex Movie Update

Jonah Hex Movie Blogsite
I want so badly for this to be good! But I have serious doubts about it, for starters Megan Fox? I mean she's good looking but she could ruin it for me, and secondly just look at this movie poster! Doesn't look like a western looks more like a GI Joe film font to me.

New Logo

I hope you like the new logo I've designed. I'm working on creating the new site for Bone Orachard, so far its looking pretty sweet, but I'm still learning how to create databases for my websites and learning how to use Dreamweaver more effectively and proficiently so it may be sooner than later, but it will most definitely be here sometime.

Also, I just finished the first season of Dead Wood tonight and I will be replacing the next blog with a review of that instead of the usual movie review, so it is going to take me a bit longer to finish it bare with me please. But, if you need a western besides that to watch this week I suggest watching "The Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman. It is fantastic if I do say so myself.

Check Out This Awesome Picture of Batman In Joker, it has a bit of a twist to it though so look a little closer.

They Call Me Trinity (1970)

Here's The Trailer: They Call Me Trinity
(This Trailer Contains A lot of Footage So If You Don't Want To Spoil it for yourself you might not want to watch it)

They Call Me Trinity is a spaghetti western directed by Enzo Barboni. If you click the link on his name it will take you to an IMDB page that has a list of the movies he's directed. He is one of the legendary spaghetti western directors. That page has quite a few movies I've never watched before I just so happened to see this one when I was younger because my dad bought it from Wal-Mart one night. Oh and if you don't know why they're called spaghetti westerns its basically because they were made over in Italy. Another example of a spaghetti western is "The Good The Bad And The Ugly", that's the most well know one.

Spaghetti westerns usually tend to have a lot of humor, goofy sounds for things (you'll see if you watch one of them), mono type audio, and a gritty movie look to them. And this one follows all of those traditions. You wont be able to stop laughing while you watch this movie, its more comedic than it is serious. Some of the things that Trinity is able to do with his gun are just absolutely ridiculous. Another funny thing you will notice about this one is the fact that it was made in the 70's, the theme song in the trailer above should give that away with it's hippie sound. Also something you are going to want to know is that the Trinity movies are a Trilogy. "They Call Me Trinity", is the first one, the second is "Trinity is Still My Name", and the third is "You Call Me Trinity, They Call Me Renegade". Those are the English titles for them at least they go by many different names depending on your nationality and location.

Basically the movie starts off with Trinity (played by Terence Hill) sleeping on a tattered wooden mat like thing that is being drug behind a horse. The horse comes to a stop and Trinity wakes up and puts his boots on. He goes into the little restaurant or bar whichever you prefer and sits down. He notices a couple men sitting at a table who are more or less the only other people there eating. They have a hostage who is wounded, they are bounty hunters taking him to jail. Trinity eats his meal and then walks over to the table and tells the wounded prisoner to get up and come on. Well the two gentleman don't take too kindly to that and so they say who do you think you are!? So he tells them and they take on the look of perplexity and shock. "Bounty Hunter: Hey, Trinity. They say you got the fastest gun around. Trinity: Is that what they say? Bounty Hunter: Yeah. Trinity: [chuckles] Geez...". And as he's walking outside towards his horse they try to shoot him in the back and well you know what happens next don't you? So he leaves and goes to this other town, that is a more typical western type town. He comes to find his brother there, his name is Bambino (played by Bud Spencer). Bambino is currently the town sheriff, but only because he needed a good disguise to take on after killing the man who was supposed to be the next towns sheriff by mistakenly thinking he was being followed. In actuality he is a horse thief and he is waiting on the rest of his crew to show up. But there is a problem the Major (played by Farely Granger) want's to get rid of the sherriff and the Bambino want's the horses that the Major owns for his own. The story ensues with lots more humor and action which we all love.

I give this western a 5 out of 5. Because anyone can enjoy it even stupid teenage girls who have no respect for the western genre.

Dead Man (1995)

Here's a link to the trailer: Dead Man Trailer

Hello Again, sorry about the belated western review. I have been rather busy the past few weekends and so I am only just now getting this new review to you and yours for your viewing pleasure.

This western is one in its own, I can't really place it in the classic western field and I can't put it in the spaghetti western genre either. It's really quite an original piece, and is very artistic and interesting.

William Blake (played by Johnny Depp) is an accountant heading for his new job in the town of Machine. He arrives at his destination to meet with his new employer John Dickinson, (played by Robert Mitchum) when he discovers that John Dickinson has already hired a new accountant and has no further use for Mr. Blake. To not give away too many details to this movie, William becomes wanted for murder and Mr. Dickinson hires a few gunman to track him down. Now William Blake is running and is wounded comes too while an native named Nobody, (played by Gary Farmer) is trying to take the bullet out of him with his knife, which for William is not too comfortable. These two become good friends along the journey that unfolds within this movie. The dialogue between the two of them is very interesting and at times funny. You soon learn to love Nobody as well as think less that William Blake is a cowardly city slicker and more of an outlaw as the story progresses further. And I will leave the rest of the plot telling to the movie itself.

Now this isn't your typical western to say the least, and if you know any of Johnny Depp's work you should have already wagered on that. You can feel its a Johnny Depp movie. It's dark, yet even so you still get that western movie feel so if you don't really like the whole Johnny Depp classic you should still enjoy this film for the simple fact that it is a western. Also this flick is not your everyday shoot em' up, run out guns a' blazin' western either, its more realistic. For example you see how savage the wild west is to someone who is not accustomed to it like a whore giving oral pleasures to a man in an alley. Yes, this movie does have some rather questionable content, but it is spread out and is not the majority of the film so it is easily ignorable. But basically to like this movie you have to have either one or both of these two characteristics, either you like Johnny Depp movies, or you like westerns. If you like neither of these fine things, you'll more than likely hate this movie all together, and not to mention it's in black and white so that would be even more of a turn off to those foolish western hating heathens.

Another essentially good thing about Dead Man is that the music is performed by none other than Neil Young. So expect to enjoy the sounds you hear along the course of the show. Its a very artsy type of film and you should be able to appreciate that considering most westerns have nothing to do with art. For example one of my favorite lines in this movie is; "That weapon will replace your tongue. You will learn to speak through it. And your poetry will now be written with blood. " Now isn't that just brutal and artistic all at once? I think so! There is also a lot of symbolism in this movie if you look for it. "This movie is not the best ever made, but it doe's have a powerful meaning as it looks into the hell that Native American's were put through. Depp is a messenger. I saw the film six months ago and felt that Depp's performance was superb. I felt that there was a powerful symbolism in the film related to our concepts of life, death, and dying."(Author: jeffreytaos from Republic of Korea, Sourced from http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112817/).

Another pro for this movie is that it has a lot of very good actors in it that you may recognize from other movies, they don't all play significant roles but they are all noticeable.

Well anyways, to conclude this review I shall say this; This movie is awesomely artistic and well thought through. The plot is very original and so is the cast. It's a great western and a great Johnny Depp film!

The con's, well if you don't like Johnny Depp or westerns you'll more than likely hate it. It is dark and some people don't like realistic and cynical type westerns and prefer more uplifting ones such as flicks by John Wayne.

I give it a 4/5, I'd love to give it a 5/5 but I have to be fair because it's not a must see western. But it comes highly recommended by me, to all of my friends and to anyone interested in seeing an original newer western.

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)

Heres the movie trailer, but it does contain spoilers in my opinion so I suggest the second one.
Original Trailer
Teaser

If you watched either of the trailer you should have found out the plot behind this movie very quickly. Jeremiah Johnson (played by Robert Redford) is a mountain man. Jeremiah Johnson was really a mountain man and Robert Redford was also a pallbearer at his relocating funeral, just an interesting fact to know.

Jeremiah Johnson is a mountain man who was formerly a soldier in the civil war, I beleive he was a Yankee due to the color of his military trousers but it was never pointed out which side he was on during the course of the film. He moves up into the mountain to get away from people and find peace. He soon finds out its not as easy as he thought to be mountain man. He has absolutely no experience with the type of conditions the mountain throws at him. The mountains have their own way. He soon runs out of food store and so he trys to head further up the mountain to find some other kind of game to kill. As he does he comes across a body where he gets his new gun and shoots himself a deer! Dinner finally comes to the table. The movie is basically about Jeremiah's evolution into the mountain man he is know for being. It's an a great experience and I envy Jeremiah for being such an awesome legend. I would love to seperate myself from society and learn how to exist basically out of nothing and learn to completely rely on God and myself without all the material possessions of the day.

The pro's and con's of this film, well there aren't many con's in my opinion but I suppose if there is one, that would be that after watching it the first time, you may get bored quite easily because its just the kind of flick for a rainy day or after a long hard day of work. But really, its just an awesome chill movie, you can just watch it a million times, or just have it on in the background while doing other things, so in a way this con is a pro!

Like I said before the scenery in this movie is awesome, it was filmed in the alps of Utah which if that doesn't sound awesome just look up some photo's on google or something and I think you'll see what I'm talking about.

The second pro of this movie is the fact of the originality it has for a western. I mean mountain man makes sense for a western, but it hasn't been done a whole lot. I honestly can't think of another movie about mountain men, except for maybe a part of Seraphim Falls

Robert Redford does an awesome job, his role in this film made me like him as an actor. It was actually the first film I ever saw him in but none the less it made me like him. He also plays in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Which is another good western!

Theres just so much good in this movie, the dialogue and the character development of Jeremiah. The awesome fight scenes between Indians and the comedic side as well. Some of the things that are said in this movie cracked me up, especially Jeremiahs conversation with Del Gue (played by Stefan Gierasch).

All in all this movie owns serious face. And it is one of my favorite all time westerns. So I rank it with a 5 out of 5. Enjoy!

The Undefeated (1969)

I grew up watching westerns, if you hadn't already guessed as much. This particular one I had not watched as much until maybe i turned 17 and I really liked it. Now that i'm 3 years older I still like it but I can see where someone who is not as big of a fan of John Wayne westerns might not enjoy this one for the same reasons I do. But, none the less there are plenty of reasons for anyone to love this movie and I will do my best to point them out.

Well the plot of this "moving picture show" is as follows. Union Colonel John Henry Thomas, (played by John Wayne) and Confederate Colonel James Langdon, (played by Rock Hudson) are both on their way to Mexico. Thomas and his men are herding horses down to sell them to the Emperor of Mexico, Maximillian, and Langdon is taking his men down to gain military support from Maximllian for the rebuilding of the confederacy. Both parties with their differences come to find friendship and the trust in the other. Specifically John and James, learn to overlook their individual opinions and forgive each other for the hostilities due to the war that had before cast them as enemies.

This film like a lot of John Wayne's films, has a few actors that you may recognize from some of his other westerns. Such as Edward Faulkner, and Ben Johnson. If you have seen some of the other John Wayne westerns with these players, it will feel as if you're watching a new chapter to the previous story. But if you dont like John Wayne type westerns, then you most likely wont enjoy this one.

The humor in this film is typical of westerns, which is good considering its a western movie. Grown men getting into massive brawls and in the end not having any distasteful feelings for one another. Like a big football game made up of old buddies!

There is also a romance that takes place in this film, and that's interesting to watch play out. But that's mostly for the ladies in my opinion and not really needed but at the same time it helps to build your understanding of the time line in which this flick takes place in.

The dialogue from the actors in this film is always a big win for me, because it gives me new phrases to use in my daily talk. One such line being "I hope you're in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead." Lines like that really make the movie for me, because that's just the sort of thing you'd expect a cowboy to say in the old west!

This one is a good one, but again its not a must see. 4 out of 5! I still love this movie, but that also comes from it being part of my childhood. John Wayne reminds me a lot of my grandfather who passed away when I was young, and also of my father because when I was younger we always watched his movies together.

Appaloosa (2008)

Here's a link to the movie trailer:"Appaloosa"

Ok, lets get to this western analysis shall we? Now simply put, this western is a very good one, especially for those of you who haven't seen many westerns and want to start watching them. This production is a good one to start off with considering it's a newer presentation to the genre.

Marshal Virgil Cole (played by Ed Harris) and his deputy Mr. Everett Hitch (played by Viggo Mortensen) are hired by the small town of Appaloosa, (hence the name of the film) to reinstate the order and law that once existed there. It seems that Mr. Bragg (played by Jeremy Irons) is not abiding by the bilaws set down by the town officials and is suspected to have been the reason behind the dissapearance of a certain Sherriff and his two deputies. Mr. Bragg and his men also do whatever they please in the town, going and taking whatever they want. "They buy their supplies in my store without paying!". So Virgil and Everett get straight to business as soon as they hear the news that some of Bragg's men are at the saloon causing some trouble. They find two of Bragg's men and tell them that they are going to jail. They resist arrest and try pulling on Cole, but Cole quickly shoots each of them down. And so the story ensues. Fast forward a bit we are introduced to a new character, a wandering petticoat who's name is Mrs. French (played by Renée Zellweger). Mr. Cole and Mrs. French become romantically involved, but that is unimportant. What is important is getting on with why you should watch this western.

For starters, my favorite thing about this movie is the relationship and dialogue between Virgil and Everett, even if you don't like watching westerns or you feel this western is just an ok addition to the genre you will still love this aspect of it. The second part that really stood out about Appaloosa was the gorgeous western scenery, as well as some of the props (an 8 gauge shotgun to be more specific). In one scene you see an old steam engine coming around the inside of a large rock formation with a mountain lion standing upon it. Now that's just brutally awesome in my personal opinion.

In all honesty, my favorite character in this movie was Mr. Hitch, not to say that Ed Harris did not do a good job with his acting, but Everett just made a big impact on me. He is considered by me to be more of the main character in this role play, an example would be how at the beginning and end of this film he is narrating his actions. It is more from his point of view. You get to see the film from where he stands. And the fact that he carries an 8 gauge shotgun is also another reason why I was such a fan of him (=D).

The one downfall of this film is the romance side of it. The personality of Mrs. French was a bothersome one, I couldn't seem to understand why Virgel a rough and tough officer of the law would be interested in having any sort of relationship with the type of woman she was portrayed as. So that may also annoy you, I know that is one reason my brother doesn't like this film as much as other ones he's seen. But I truly enjoyed this film aside from that little fact. Not only does it have a serious side dealing with the pride and duty of men like Mr. Cold and Mr. Hitch, but it also has good humor in it. The talk between the two souls can make you burst out laughing, and possilbly be misunderstood by any woman in the room with you. Woman just don't understand the ways of us gentleman, sigh.

Still this movie being one I truly like, I wouldn't say it is a must see western of all time. But more of a must see new western, contemplating the fact that there aren't as many new westerns are there are old ones. I give it a 4/5. Hope you enjoy it I know I did!

Pale Rider (1985)

Here's a Link To The Movie Trailer:Pale Rider

"Pale Rider" is one of Clint Eastwood's westerns. He directed it, and is he also plays the main character in it. A mysterious preacher with an unknown name. That idea in itself should be enough to make you want to run to Blockbuster and find this movie! But for those of you who need more convincing, just keep reading.

A group of "tinpans" or in other words gold panners have made a camp on their claim. But someone else wants the claim for them self. Coy LaHood (played by Richard Dysart) wants to run them off what is rightfully theirs. He sends his men to raid the camp and in the process of raiding it they kill off one girls dog. Her name is Megan Wheeler (played by Sydney Penny), and she buries her dog and prays to God for a miracle. Well that is where Mr. Eastwood rides in to save the day as a whiskey drinkin', bible preachin', gunslingin', reverend!

This film was actually based on a book, also called "Pale Rider" you can get a copy of it off of Amazon for pretty cheap, I ordered one for a penny, though shipping was about 4 dollars, just because I love westerns and needed some good western books to read.

I enjoy the majority of Clint's westerns, at least the one's I've seen thus far which have been a lot. And this one is pretty close to the top of my favorite western's by him. Unlike John Wayne western's this western takes on the usual tone of Clint western's which is cynical. Evil is real and this world is full of it. This movie actually has some pretty good values, one of those values being "spirit ain't spit without some exercise". It takes work to get things done it's never just handed to us. And personally I agree with this, I am a Christian so i can relate to some of the struggles that some of the personalities in this movie dealt with. Struggling with your faith for one, wanting a sign from God wanting him to show that he's there. The preacher is the answer from God for the "tinpanners", he gives them hope. But the camps people soon find out that they have to find strength in themselves and not just rely souly on Clint Eastwood to do everything for them, because he can't stay there to fight all their battles.

The one complaint I have about this movie is that Clint has premarital sex with someone in it, though I wont say who. It does not show anything, it is only implied but the fact that he does this contradicts what he supposedly stands for, and is an unnecessary Hollywood element suggesting that lust is love. For some this wont be a problem but If you are religious that will annoy you, but should not stop you from still loving this movie especially considering the good points outweigh that single downfall. All in all I love this movie and I think you will to, I give it a 4 out of 5.

New Rating System.
(1 = Not Worth One Second of Your Time)
(2 = Was almost a good movie, but still not worth it)
(3 = Definitely entertaining and enjoyable, neutral)
( 4 = It is worth your time, but if you don't watch it you wont die from guilt.)
(5 = Must See Western)

Just an FYI from Craig.

I will be posting a new review up about a western each week. I'll try to have them up every Friday so you can have a chance over the weekend to view the western. Also, I will try to put up a link to a torrent download so you can view the western. But if you like the western I recommend buying it after you view it. Also, once I put up a new blog I will remove the link to the previous western. And last but not least I will start putting a ranking on each western I review it will go as such; 1-5. one being the least 5 being the highest. One is not worth your time, 5 is I highly recommend.

"Eldorado" (1966)

This will be my first western review and I've decided to do it on the movie "Eldorado", starring John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. I love this western for starters, I've watched it over and over and that is why I decided to do this one first.

The story line of this particular western, in a lot of ways resembles the story for another popular western called "Rio Bravo". This is because John Wayne knows a girl in both of them that like him but he shows no interest even though at heart he truly does, but you don't find that out till the end. And in both movies he holds up in a jail while helping out his drunk friend get sober and take in a criminal. But they do have their differences, and I can't remember them both at present because it's been awhile since I've watched "Rio Bravo".

This film, like many of John Wayne's westerns is alot more light hearted than your typical western movie of today. Well almost anyways aside from a few parts like John Wayne killing an innocent boy by mistake ("You sent a boy out to do a man's job"), but all in all the movie isn't dark. It isn't a movie that will make you think about the insecurities of one charecter based on the ego or tough charecteristics of another but more of a bang bang shoot um up western that I personally have grown to love just as much as the very realistic and cynical types such as; "The Assassination of Jesse James" or "There Will Be Blood".

John Wayne plays the charecter "Cole Thorton" a quick drawing gunslinger for higher. He is offered a job by "Bart Jason" (played by Edward Asner). Not knowing that what Mr. Jason want's him to do is make the Mcdonald's give Bart their land by force. He finds out just exactly that by the Sheriff of Eldorado "Jp Harra", one of Cole's long lost friends who apparently is just as quick on the draw as him. So after talking to Jp, he goes to Bart Jason and tells him he's decided not to take the job after all.

Later on into the story, Cole finds himself at a salloon where Nelse McLeod (played by Christopher George) and his 3 companions are sitting down to dinner when Mississippi or Alan Bourdillion Trahern (played by James Caan) makes his entrance into the movie by killing a man that happens to be part of McLeod's gang. Cole steps in and after they come to a peaceful resolution talks to McLeod and finds out that he is taking the job that he earlier had turned down, and that J.P. has become a drunk and wont cause him any real trouble. Realizing his friend is in danger as well as the Mcdonald's Cole heads back to Eldorado. Along the way Mississippi comes back into play and persuades Cole to let him join up with him as well. And so our story ensues but back to the review.

The cast did a great job portraying the feel of just how it felt for each personality when dealing with one another, with each of them having their own set of headstrong ideals and each having their own personal egos it made the tension realistic and it made the movie feel like it could have really happened, or atleast made you wish it really had happened.

Also on a side note but not to demeen how much I love this movie but to possibly add upon how much I love John Wayne is the fact that you can see how the actor really was and see how he reacted to the other actors through his acting with them. Such as one part near the end of the movie where Cole is leaning on a cruch that he had previously been using with his opposite arm, and J.P. makes the statment that he is using the wrong arm and Cole replies by saying "well how would you know!? you've had it under one arm and then another". I beleive this was actually the actors speaking to another but was left in because of the humor it posed. But don't take my word for it I honestly don't know if that's a fact or not, you'll just have to see it for yourself.

Well in conclusion, I thought this western was a great one and I give it a 5 out of 5 on my western scale, hope you enjoyed this review and I hope you enjoy the movie even more.
-Craig Cooper, Bone Orchard.

Hello There!

Hi there. My name is Craig Cooper and I am a huge fan of the genre of film known as Westerns. Some of you may know a few I mention here; "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", "Eldorado", 3:10 To Yuma", "Rio Bravo", and various others. Well because I love those movies so much I wanted to start a review blog all about westerns. And I also wanted to start a blog about video games. I am a novice web designer currently and my plan is to make a web site called Bone Orchard Reviews, but at present I am still in the process of making one so I decided to go ahead and get this blog started anyways to get the name out. Please check out my blog and look for updates or add the RSS FEED. And I will try to put up atleast one Western review each week, and videogame reviews whenever I can considering videogames take a little longer to get through than movies haha. Thanks -Craig.
